And when I woke up this morning it was still true!

I'm thinking of dying my hair a celebratory shade of red. Or blonde. Flaxen McKew perhaps?

John Pilger's article in New Stateman is slightly alarmist, but an excellent overview of Australia and John Howard's relationship with the U.S. He sets it into historical context, looking at the idea of the Commonwealth, Menzies' role in sending Australian troops to Vietnam and Murdoch's continuing skillz at stifling dissent.

What he said.

Isn't it funny/sad how rapidly the ideals of the "old normal", where decisions might have been based on evidence, analysis, reason and judgement, are becoming a romantic dream? The "new normal" depends on instant decisions based on "gut", "instinct" and "faith". Decisions that are reactions against perceived threats and inflated fear.

By 12.30 this afternoon we had visited the MCG (for the first time), listened to some great speeches by people opposed to, and directly discriminated by, Howard's industrial relations laws, stood for the national anthem, joined in a Mexican wave, clapped along to Jimmy Barnes singing Working Class Man and taken a gander at the Myer Christmas windows.

Please excuse me while I go and have a little lie down.

This is the first event, in 30 years of living in Melbourne, that has come close to enticing me into the MCG.

Too much fun.

(thanks, anonymous LJer!)

Edit: The "feature" has been disabled. According to this Age article it was the work of a hacker that freely allowed anonymous posting to the Family First blog.

Edit #2: Anthony, Damien and Kyle have gone further in on this one, taking screenshots, talking to Senator Fielding and being sensibly critical.
