Me Meme

An actual interesting meme, nicked from some random LJ person.
So, say you were meeting a new person - blind date, new friend, who knows. And you wanted them to have some idea of what kind of person you are, and who you are. But you can't actually tell them in so many words. Instead, you have to give them a box, with a dozen things in it for them to look at/read/listen to/taste/whatever. What would you put in the box? And a copy of your journal or a link to your LJ would be the same thing as just telling them directly, yourself, so that's not allowed.

The CD Ultimate Lessons 2 by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist
DVD Box Set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 3
A large bowl of So Good Vanilla Soy Ice Cream with Haigh's Dark Chocolate Sauce and chopped nuts
A copy of Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman
A vintage sewing pattern
A dictionary
The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales
A lined notepad and pen (Uni-Ball Eye UB-157 fine point, black)
DVD of Heathers
A pair of black 8-up Doc Martens
Book of 10 tickets to the Astor Theatre

That was actaully quite hard - coming up with a varied list and leaving out about a gazillion books and movies! I'd love to see what other people would choose.

It's like a kind of torture

Neil Gaiman has a good point regarding the purchase of parts of Henson by Disney.
Selfishly, if it means that the Complete 1970s Muppet Shows finally comes out on DVD, I'll be happy.

Not too far to run

Cirque du Soleil to set up in Melbourne. This is great! Now I can safely encourage Abbey to run away to join the circus and she won't have very far to go.

Send the Marines

I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice that Bush is getting all his ideas from that musical genius Tom Lehrer:

When someone makes a move
Of which we don't approve,
Who is it that always intervenes?
U.N. and O.A.S.,
They have their place, I guess,
But first send the Marines!

We'll send them all we've got,
John Wayne and Randolph Scott,
Remember those exciting fighting scenes?
To the shores of Tripoli,
But not to Mississippoli,

What do we do? We send the Marines!
For might makes right,
And till they've seen the light,
They've got to be protected,
All their rights respected,
'Till somebody we like can be elected.

Members of the corps
All hate the thought of war,
They'd rather kill them off by peaceful means.
Stop calling it aggression,
O we hate that expression.
We only want the world to know
That we support the status quo.
They love us everywhere we go,
So when in doubt,
Send the Marines!

Titchy Little Books

Why is it that collections of notable quotes by women invariably come in titchy little books? I bet if a bunch of things that men said were printed it wouldn't be this small.
