Richard Jones' Log: Great indie RPG

Wed, 10 Aug 2005

Fate has a solid lineage of Diablo and Roguelike games, with some interesting ideas of its own. I can see it'll be a great game for just jumping into casually. Or wasting hours on ;)

Quitting the game left a "GameDrvr.exe" process running. It also quietly sneaks in a "Wild Tangent" control panel. I play my fair share of games, and they don't do this sort of thing (ie, I've never had a PopCap game leave it's stuff lying around.) http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/245-p1.php The sad thing is, I tought Fate was kind of neat and would consider unlocking it, but I don't need extra cruft running on my box for no good reason.

Ah crap. Here I was getting all excited about a cool indie game, promoting it to everyone I know, and they go and pull a stupid stunt like this.

I would also add that it's not compatible with ZoneAlarm, at all. Even if you give it ample permissions *and* shut down the firewall!

I
was able to play the game for a week, downloaded updates to my firewalls and was asked to re-unlock the game. I couldn't. I'm still waiting on a patch or customer service answer.

Maybe WildTangent's rep preceeds it.
